A Guide to Lock Security Against Home Burglary

Talk about home security and people think first of alarm systems and cameras. Yet the vast majority of incidents begin somewhere far more ordinary: a weak lock, or a door that doesn't close properly. A camera records the event; a lock prevents it — which is why the order matters.

The good news is that strengthening your door meaningfully isn't expensive. A few small interventions in the right places make a marked difference to how much of a deterrent your door is.

The weakest link in the chain

A door is only as secure as its weakest component. A low-grade cylinder fitted to a steel door wipes out every advantage that door has. Equally, a strong cylinder isn't enough on its own if the frame is weak or the hinges are exposed.

That's why the assessment has to be a whole: the cylinder, the lock body, the frame, the hinges and how the door seats into the frame all need looking at together. In most homes the cylinder is the weakest link — and fortunately it's also the easiest part to change.

Strengthen your cylinder

Because the cylinder is the only component reachable from outside, it's the focus of attacks. One that protrudes too far from the door can be gripped and snapped, which is why the correct measurement is critical. Cylinders protected against snapping, drilling and pulling extend the time an attack takes very considerably.

Extending that time is the real objective here. Burglary is mostly opportunistic, and a door that doesn't yield quickly gets abandoned. Strengthening your cylinder is the most direct way to take your door off the easy-target list.

If you've moved, always change it

When you move into a new home you can never know how many keys exist for that door. The previous tenant, the landlord, a builder, a cleaner or a neighbour — tracking who still has a key is impossible. Your security depends not on the number of keys handed to you, but on the total number out there.

That makes changing the cylinder in your first days in a new home the highest-return security investment you can make. The job is quick, the cost is low, and the peace of mind is real.

The gaps beyond the door

While you're strengthening your front door, don't forget the other ways in. Ground-floor and garden-level windows, balcony doors and garage connections are frequently overlooked. A balcony door that looks locked but is merely pulled to renders a strong front door meaningless.

Pay attention to the area around your door as well: spare keys left under the mat, in a plant pot or in the meter box are the first places burglars look. A spare key belongs with someone you trust, not outside the house.

Before you go on holiday

If you're leaving the house for a long stretch, a few simple measures make a big difference. Make sure the door is genuinely locked — on multi-point locks the system doesn't fully engage until you lift the handle and turn the key, and a great many people don't know that.

Saving your holiday posts on social media until you're back, stopping the post from piling up and asking a neighbour to look in occasionally all stop the house from looking empty. To an opportunist, an empty-looking house is the most attractive target there is.
